For me, mp3lib works OK, but ffmpeg is very slow.

mp3lib/mad/ffmpeg can be chosen at runtime, just look at : mplayer -ac
help
Also, maybe it would be nicer if bugs were reported upstream instead of only
being workarounded :

It's not a bug in the mp3lib but somewhere else it seems. the version from
dapper doesn't work either.
I'll disable mp3lib in the next upload for now which will then use mad or
ffmpeg's mp3 decoder for decoding.

crimsun found this patch. It doesn't apply cleanly to our mplayer but it
could fix the bug so we should maybe use a cvs snapshot of mp3lib/*
