I tried the network-share again and now it works for me with both anonymous and
authenticated-only access.
The versions of the installed packages are:
ii samba 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6
SMB/CIFS file, print, and login server for Unix
ii
Could you give the output of:
ls -ld /home/stather/VMs
Also try to add "usershare owner only = no" to your /etc/samba/smb.conf file.
