I'm guessing the upgrade transition from karmic to lucid will take care
of that. You can ask about it in #ubuntu+1 on freenode if you like, or
you may open a new bug against the indicator package when lucid ships if
it's still an issue.

Was the kernel update the only change to the system that could have
caused this issue? Were other packages updated along with the kernel?
There was also a recent change to the audio mixer applet. That
update/change may be causing your issues.
