Can you help us recreate the problem? It sounds like it is related to
your locale. Can you attach the output from the "locale" command?

I can't replicate this with Dapper's 0.43-4, and in fact I've never
noticed this with earlier versions of Ubuntu & Inkscape - and I use
Inkscape daily, and do lots of text work in it.

I talked about this on #ubuntu-bugs today. Several others were unable to
confirm. This seems to be an IM bug (probably SCIM?).
I have SCIM installed with GTK IM module.
