If a user doesn't have write permission to the device, then they can't mount it. So yes, this is required for auto-mounting of disks to work. I don't agree that this will hurt new users, they're unlikely to be poking around in /dev ** Changed in: udev (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed => Rejec
