Have you tried to change the default sound card used in the volume
control preferences? Right click the speaker icon, and select sound
preferences. Go to the hardware tab, and choose the sound card you want
to use, then close the window.

Please enable the karmic-updates repository, dist-upgrade, install
linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.31-19-generic from the ubuntu-audio-dev
