Nope, problem still exists here, even after purging/reinstall kdm. It's
really strange that you does not have any tty at all!

A workaround that works for me is that after a reboot I press ESC couple
of times in the moment I see kubuntu sigh with a progress bar.

Happens to me too. After boot, the screen goes black, switching to a
console and back brings up KDM.
The consoles aren't usable either (see screenshot).
Occured after the update to KDE4.4 from Kubuntu backports on
System: Kubuntu 9.10 i386
nvidia Geforce 7300, propietary driver 1.85.18.36

Same here. Logging in (with flickering screen) and then restarting the
X-Server by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace gives you also the kdm login-
screen.

I have the same problem. (kubuntu 9.10 amd64 with kde 4.4). If I try to
get automatically to kdm, the xorg crash. However, If I start in
recovery mode (as root or as normal user), I dont have any problem. I
have a Ati video card .
