Sorry for the lengthy delay.
Re-installing libc6 libglib2.0-0 and libmono did the trick. What in
these three packages was bad, I have no idea. My guess is that
something got b0rked due to hard reboots, due to X locking up
occasionally, thus the filesystem wound up with some oddities.
So should
Dapper.
I listed what was going on with Rhythmbox since it was one of the
programs which got queued for removal when I was doing my mono purge,
just in case it was a corrupted install or something.
Although I had looked on the ubuntu forums for something like this, I
only just found this:

Is this on edgy or on dapper?
And Rhythmbox is no mono application so it could also be a deeper problem on
your machine.
