Hi Thomas, ah interesting. No, no need to try booting differently;
apparently someone else must have felt that workaround to be important
enough to include, so we can consider that a fix. Since this issue
isn't occurring by default anymore, I'll close it as fixed.

Hello Bryce,
I'm really happy that the "old" post ist being looked at. Thank you for
that!
I don't have any problems with my ATI card by now, console-switching
bugs included. The only problem is compiz, but that's really another
issue.
BUT:
After my post, I had to reinstall my system (I switched
John, no, 'vga=normal' is a workaround, not a proper fix for this issue.
Thomas, could you attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and let us know if
it's still an issue with Gutsy-final?

X crashes when changing VT (ATI X1700)
https://launchpad.net/bugs/52030
** Description changed:
If I change from X (F7) to another virtual console, say a virtual
console (F1) or a second X window, X crashes.
Steps to reproduce:
Log-in to Gnome, Press CTRL+ALT+F1
Results:
After some time, I can see the graphical Login Greeter (no console window)
Okay, it's solved: adding "vga=normal" to the kernel parameters does the
trick.
Please apologize that I didn't find this solution (out of Ubuntu
documentation) earlier. Nevertheless, this could be a problem for other
persons. Perhaps this kernel parameter could be added automagically if a
ATI card
