there are a few bug reports about this, most likely duplicated ones...
I have Lucid amd64 and I'm also affected.
I'm not sure but it seams to happen when computer comes out of suspension.
the easy fix is to run "killall telepathy-butterfly" and then reconnect, it
works, but it's a pain.

I think that somehow, Empathy, or the combination of Empathy and the MSN
network rejected my password. I was able to access the MSN messenger service
through aMSN, for example, and Pidgin too, without any problems.
The problem dissapeared when i changed my password from a long one (17
characters)
Is there an update on this bug? I am also finding my MSN account is not
connecting and would be happy to gather logs as needed or even let you
remote into my machine if needed...
