This was probably actually a plymouth bug that was fixed not too long
ago. It was hiding on one of your other vts waiting for to be
hit, and then it'd kill your X session.

I confirm. After all those kernel, firmware, drm and xorg updates, X is finally
working with modeset & dri & glx :-)
The only issue I have is that the first login attempt always falls back to
login screen. Also I've experienced two hard freezes since the last relevant
update (about a week or so,
It seems that after latest updates problem has been fixed.
I haven't hit this issue for week. It could be fixed by latest kernel 2.6.32-14.

My problem seems to be the same - but more severe. This started
immediately after upgrading to the 10.4 alpha2 release. Every time I
boot the system X crashes just before I can login. Sometimes I see the
login screen, sometimes usually I cannot. I've attached my Xorg log as
well - please contac
Mostly this issue happens when I press Enter after password on Gnome
login page. So I have to use mouse as workaround (click on "Login"
button). But when I login to Gnome, open web browser and want to
authenticate in my webmail application, the same situation occurs again.
