I have a similar problem. I run Ubuntu 6.06 on a dell optiplex gx260. Sound stopped working last week in the middle of a TV show and I've had no sound at all in Ubuntu since. I can't identify any errors at all in any logs in /var/log. I update my system manually every couple of days, so I don't be
