i read somewhere that plymouth not starting might have something to do
with the proprietary nvida driver installed. i will try out the nouveau
driver and see whether this changes an

Please confirm that you have the plymouth package installed. Plymouth
is configured to *always* start before mountall starts, so the only
reasons you would continue to get this error message are if plymouth is
not installed, or if plymouth has failed to start / exited abnormally.

Well, the reason for mountall to be unable to connect to plymouth would
be plymouth not having started. This should be fixed in the latest
upload (0.8.0~-8); please reopen if this is not the case.
