I have removed "linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic" & installed the
crack-of-the-day alsa-driver (including the linux-alsa-driver-modules
package) but jack-sensing (if that is what it is called) is still not
working on a HP HDX9000.
$ uname -a
Linux hdx-karmic 2.6.31-19-generic #56-Ubuntu SMP Thu
You need to install the linux-alsa-driver-modules package from the
ubuntu-audio-dev that matches your kernel version. See
http://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive to find out what
packages are available.

I added ubuntu-audio-dev PPA and did an update. It only updated
pulseaudio software packages. It didn't update anything alsa.
The internal speaker is still not muted when using the headphone jack.

You need a crack-of-the-day alsa-driver build installed. See the
ubuntu-audio-dev PPA.

I can confirm this on a HP HDX9000 with identical sound hardware with
"linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic" installed.
