I think I understand the problem better now.

Your latest mountall log shows that only /var fails to mount, and /home

don't have a copy of your fstab in this bug log, can you attach that as

There is no new dmsetup version.
dmsetup has version 2:1.02.39-1ubuntu4, even if it was built from lvm2
2.02.54-1ubuntu4.
That's at least what "apt-cache policy dmsetup" and
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/amd64/dmsetup
tell me.

Stefan,
Please check whether this problem goes away after installing dmsetup
2.02.54-1ubuntu4. There's a good chance this is a duplicate of bug
#561390.

Thanks a lot for your support until now.
But is there nothing I can do to pin this down?
No debug printfs or something like that?
Stracing a process?
Nothing?
I do not understand the plumbing layer enough to do this on my own.
So I would need some assistance...
And shouldn't a bug be opened regar
Yes, that does make it hard to debug. I seem to have the same problem
locally - the udev job is certainly running, but doesn't show up in
/var/log/boot.log.
Sorry, I seem to be at a dead end for the moment, given that this seems
not to be reproducible for most users (including me) and we're not
g
It's clearly difficult to debug this when the log file contains only part of
the truth.
Or how can it be that upstart-udev-bridge runs without /var/log/boot.log
mentioning it?

You are right.
When I do not stop mountall /var/log/boot.log gets written without enabling
bootlogd in /etc/default/bootlogd.
A minor nit is that the time of the file is wrong, it's two hours behind.
Her the shell output 5 minutes after boot:
# ls -al /var/log/boot.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1902
> Therefore no filesystem event is triggered for /var.
Well, as long as mountall is allowed to finish running, it should notice
the filesystems have been mounted and emit the 'filesystem' event
anyway.
> cryptdisks-udev starts on "block-device-added" event.
> What triggers that event?
Those even
Enabling of bootlogd is probably needed because /var is on a separate partition
I have to mount with "mount -a". Therefore no filesystem event is triggered for
/var.
# ls -al /etc/init/cryptdisks-udev.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 435 2010-02-20 07:28 /etc/init/cryptdisks-udev.conf
# ls -al /lib/c
Are you sure your system is up to date? You shouldn't have to enable
bootlogd to get this log, it should be created for you by plymouth via
/etc/init/plymouth-log.conf.
Is /etc/init/cryptdisks-udev.conf present on your system? There's no
mention in the log of this job being started by upstart, b
I had to enable bootlogd in /etc/default/bootlogd first, but now here is
the file.

Thanks. Can you attach /etc/default/cryptdisks too?
Also, booting with --verbose on the kernel commandline, and sending
/var/log/boot.log, may provide some insight.
