I just tested update-manager again. It runs OK typed with sudo in the
terminal, but does not work with gksu. I hope this helps.

I am now running Lucid. Until I updated today, update-manager worked as
it was supposed to. I updated around 10:30 pm MST. When I run sudo
update-manager in the terminal, it works (as I found out it did in
Karmic). Unless I type sudo with the command, it gives an error message
and crashes.
