I apologize ! I just face-palmed myself for this one.
I seem to have skimmed the man page too quickly as the correct command
naturally is:
$ lookup /var/lib/lookup/compdic /var/lib/lookup/edict
/var/lib/lookup/enamdict /var/lib/lookup/kanjidic
I do however hold that the above described behavior
