Well it seems that after all this was not linked to the new kernel, rather to Gnome and/or GTK. After an update, everything is back to normal. The following packages were upgraded: gtk2-engines-pixbuf 2.8.18-0ubuntu1 -> 2.8.18-0ubuntu2 libgtk2.0-0 2.8.18-0ubuntu1 -> 2.8.18-0ubuntu2 libgtk2.0-bin
