wpasupplicant is using well defined interfaces (wext). this is rather a
bug in the bcm43xx driver, so I opened a bugtask for the kernel 2.6.15
source.
Btw, did have the chance to retry with edgy (2.6.17) or feisty (2.6.20)?

I wouldn't expect this bug to be fixed in dapper. Please try the edgy
beta 1 desktop cd and try to reproduce this bug.
Alvin: I think the lockup with atheros is another bug. Please file a new
one more information about your setup.

same with my desktop on using ATHEROS chipset, 2GB ram, AMD Athlon 64,
updated DAPPER (AMD64). remove wpa_supplicant and the machine never
locks up.
also emachines laptop with BCM43xx chipset, 512MB ram, SEMPRON, updated
edgy (x86).
also acer laptop with BCM43xx chipset, 1GB ram, AMD Turion 64
