Right smbfs has a 2GB limits, you can use cifs but you need to change
your mount options.

Ahhh, I remember what the situation was, it was an ext3 filesystem
mounted via Samba from a Linux fileserver. So, is it smbfs that doesn't
support large files then?

I believe that these dumps were being done to either and ext3 fs, or and
xfs fs, but I'm not certain which. I assumed both had large file
support, so I didn't think about it.
I'll attempt to recreate the problem on both filesystems here, and see
what happens.

works for me on dapper i386 and amd64. do you try to dump to a
filesystem which doesn't support large files?
