This works on other distributions without tweaking BIOS settings. It
used to be a problem on Fedora and Red Hat, but they fixed it ages ago.

Resolved. Only 1MB of video memory was reserved in the BIOS. I changed
this to 8MB (the max), which resolved the problem.
