in the Sound Preferences as you've described.

I still think that perhaps a single sentence "Sounds played by the login
window can be found in the Administration menu's Login Window panel",
somewhere below the "login" sound button in the sound preferences, would
be useful.

The "Sound Preferences" panel is for editing the sounds played for the
current individual user; the login sound affects all users, so you'll
find it under the Administration menu's Login Window panel, under
Accessibility.

After installing from the ubuntu DVD (oem install), everything works ok.
After updating to the newest kernell, the login drum keeps repeating and almost
freezes my system.
Also the startup-sound keeps repeating, hardly able to move my mouse...
K7 kernel, AMD Athlon XP 2100...
