Note, I can ssh to the machine after the freeze, so I kill compiz, then
run
DISPLAY=:0 metacity --replace
and hence restore the GUI without having to restart the machine.

Same problem for me.
When compiz is running on a i945 based motherboard, the X server freeze
short after logging. The only way to resolve this trouble, is to disable
compiz.
