requires installing an extra package (lm-sensors) and some manual
configuration. Without that information available, a checkbox test for
fans is impossible to write; further, since it would require the user

Flavio, I'll check the temperature with 'sensors' in future. The five
or so Ubuntu systems I've installed (8.04, 10.04) do seem to demand less
processor time than the XP or Vista or 7 system hat was already
installed, and seem quicker and faster to respond. But that is before
any demanding applic

Clark, just search launchpad and you'll see how/the many models that have bogus
BIOS or whatnot that messes temperature sensors and fans.
IMHO "CPU is just less stressed under Ubuntu" is innacurate; it happens on few
systems and by a small margin.

Update - most of the laptops I've tried have eventually started running
their fans. Presumably, the CPU is just less stressed and running
cooler under Ubuntu than under Windows. But in any case, just waiting
to see if the fan comes on is not a good test. I have discovered the
"sensors" package,
