XPP does not modify the data stream which goes to the printer, it only
send the option settings chosen in th GUI to CUPS together with the job.
So
lpr -P -o number-up=4
is asolutely equivalent to
xpp
when choosing the printer in XPP and then clicking "Options"
and choosing 4 pages per sheet
Looks like to me SeG have given all info requested, so passing from
Needs Info, to Unconfirmed.

Your original bug report (haven't read the postings below that) looks
like your original print file is content with some issue, so that what
CUPS' pstops filter sees coming along has a problem (like not being
compliant as "DSC PostScript") it cannot process correctly.
It could also be a problem of

Can you verify you have libgnomeprint2.2-0version 2.12.1-3ubuntu2
installed as Anté suggested (dpkg -l libgnomeprint2* should give the
answer).
Can you try if n-up printing from a command line
works by printing a multipage pdf document, e.g.:
$ lp -d Canon -o number-up=4 file.pdf

something I forgot to mention after printer such a job (2 or more pages a sheet)
the gnome cups dialog says:
PRINT: USB printer is busy; will retry in 5 seconds...
but the printer never returns
i restarted cupsys ... nothing
the only thing which helps is rebooting or unpluggin the printer and rep

for testing i started evince in a shell.

Could you try with some other application (evince, etc...)? But, please,
before you try, add this to /etc/apt/sources.list:

run apt-get update, apt-get upgrade.
