This is not an appropriate way to declare a package "obsolete". If you
think a package should not be used, file a bug to get it removed from
the archive and *then* invalidate the bugs.

The powernowd package is obsolete, please do not use it. CPU frequency
scaling is now handled by the kernel, so if you still have issues on a
modern release, file a bug against the linux package.

The bug still "lives" in lucid. I have a freshly installed lucid x64 system and

A workaround (which I am using currently): disable the feature
completely in the BIOS, so the driver will not load even if powernowd is
started. This is much more robust than removing the package (and having
it added again during an upgrade).

I noticed this also happens anytime I start Ubuntu (or any of it's

I can confirm this..

Same bug for me.
I tried to use cpufreqd insetead of powernowd, but the same things happens
(works ok for a while and then crash the system).
Due wath happenes with both powernowd and cpufreqd, it seems to be a
powernow-k8 module bug.

Another datapoint:
When upgrading from edgy to feisty, the upgrade manager (running on KDE,

I can confirm also powernowd is the culprit for a Gigabyte GA-K8NSXNP
motherboard, AMD 64 3200+/2.2GHz. I think I disabled it when I
installed Dapper, and haven't had a problem since, but would like to
reduce power consumption. It was a bastard initially troubleshooting.,

This also occurs during the 7.04 install, making it completely unusable.
I believe this is a show-stopper bug for a handful of users, so perhaps
the severity/priority needs to be bumped?

Hello all,
I'm having this exact same problem on a Gigabyte GA-K8NS motherboard
with an AMD Athlon64 3400 processor.
The status of this bug is still at "Needs Info" and has been for a fair
while, could someone let me know what information is required so that I
can get this issue resolved.

I have this exact same problem. I have definitively narrowed it down to
powernowd: I have configured it to not start in the regular bootup
sequence, but when issuing a direct
/etc/init.d/powernowd start
it crashes the box.
Information of use:
# uname -a
Linux ian 2.6.15-25-amd64-generic #1 SMP P
this occurs on new install - I therefore am not able to provide logs as it
does not write to hdd
unless u know different- i dont know that much really??
thanks

would be useful there is the boot log which you can find in the system
