I did a fresh install of Karmic, but the sound seemed to work fine on my
machine. Same thing after I ran the Update Manager - the sound seems
perfectly fine.
Could you tell me how to reproduce the problem? Has it fixed itself?

Oops. It seems that this problem is actually fixed in Lucid. I had
selected the wrong audio output device.
