What about the modem-modeswitch tool? Will it be able to do the switching now?
Why do we have 2 tools for that anyway?
Is usb-modemswitch installed by default in Lucid?

Hi,
I don't know why this bug still applies to udev. AFAICT, udev is no more
supposed to handle the switching. I reported bug #519216 to get the
latest usb-modeswitch version from Debian in Lucid. I can't do more.

yes i tried modem-modeswitch before installing usb_modeswitch
i tried to plug the 3G modem in & wait until it switches to USB MODEM, but it
doesn't switch,, i tried to eject it and unmount but no success,
then i installed the latest usb_modeswitch_data,then i worked correctly,now i
just plug in t
USB-modeswitch is already included in Karmic.
It's just not installed by default because it's in the universe repo.
However, there is a modem-modeswitch tool installed by default which
should be able to perform the same actions.
Have you tried that?

i tested your solution but it doesn't work;
i downloaded & installed the lastest usb_modeswicth (link you gave me) it
worked in 8.04 and 9.04 but not in 9.10
it doese't switch from usb_massStorage to modem even the default configuration
in the /etc/usb_modeswitch is SAMSUNG U209
