I don't know if this changes the status or not, but I had this same
problem. I had to use the 'Sound preferences' (gnome-volume-control) to
change the Hardware profile to 'Analog Stereo Duplex' as well as un-
muting the device.

OK, just tested with 2.6.32-rc7 from the mainline kernels.

There is a known bug (fixed in 2.6.31.6) in linux that affects you. Please
wait for 2.6.31-16.51 to enter karmic-proposed, and test it.
