This hasn't been resolved with Lucid.
I can add that as of this morning, the situation is exactly the same. And in
fact, I purchased another external serial modem, which is also not being
detected. It's an AOPEN serial fax/modem.

Binary package hint: gnome-ppp
I'm using a serial dialup modem. US Robotics Sportster X2 56k faxmodem. NOT
the laptops internal Winmodem.
The serial modem works properly, using kernel 2.6.28-16. It is not detected
when
OK. Created a USB startup disk with Lucid on it.
After booting into Lucid, I'm getting the same message from GNOME-PPP as I was
with 9.10.
DMESG follows;

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the

I've gone back to 9.04 because of this bug. Is anyone looking into it?

Well, I need the dmesg file from kernel 2.6.31 after you've booted with
the modem plugged in.
Please also attach the output of "sudo lsusb".
In theory, dgc modems shouldn't need a driver any longer under Karmic,
and should automatically show up as /dev/ttyACM0.

Oh, please disregard my previous post, I hadn't noticed this was with an
external modem.
I will still need the dmesg file from kernel 2.6.31 though.

Could you please attach your /var/log/dmesg and ~/.wvdial.conf files?
Remove the username and password out of .wvdial.conf first though.
