I applied this patch on my ubuntu 12.04 system, and it works for my
4-screen 2-gpu xinerama setup.

I've tried. Glacial movement.
I'm willing to test any patches you can provide, assuming I can have a
non-intrusive method of testing them. A PPA package would be best.
Unfortunately, as I was trying out the patch, I wasn't able to get back
to my original GTK. There are some cyclic included files
Could you try to get upstream review maybe by pinging on the bug or mailing
their list?
We try to limit gtk change in the distribution while they are not accepted
upstream usually
