I'd forgotten about this.
I can verify that the fix is NOT evident on a newly installed Fedora
Core 12, gnumeric 1.8.4
I will test Ubuntu 10.04 at home this evening.

This should be verified as to the status in Ubuntu 10.04. We don't need
to backport the changes if it is not fixed yet in gnumeric 1.10.1, which
is in 10.04. According to the gnome bug report:
