Muting the left or the right channel worked for me. Good workaround, but
it would be really nice to have this solved in pulse audio or alsa.

I borrowed a friend's external mic to first make sure that it would work
and later bought a super cheap external mic on newegg or amazon (I don't
remember which) for less than $10 (USD). I am hoping that this bug will
be fixed soon, hopefully for the next release of Ubuntu in April!

Hello,
I have the same problem with skype: no internal or external mics working at
all. Dear Dean Malmgren, do you really got your external mic working with
skype? How did you do that? Any other person got this? This could be a
work-around for me!
I have an acer aspire 3810T, and int&ext mics wo

I can confirm that the external mic works with skype but the internal
mic still does not work. It is strange that the internal mic does work
with gnome-sound-recorder though. I don't know enough about the setup
on these things, but why would it work in one program and not in the
other?

hi,
This might be related to bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/434520 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/414215 . Could
you try to use empathy etc with an external mic plugged in?

Thanks for reporting this wilcoxjay, I also have the same problem on my
acer aspire one. Which confims that this is indeed a bug. Hopefully it
will grab some more attention now that I marked it as confirmed.

I hate to be a bother again with no new information, but I'd really like
to push for this to be fixed. It seems to me that it is a superficial
lack of communication between some of the little people which make my
computer go. I'd love to fix this myself if someone could point me in

Hi, I am having the same problem as well. This is the first time I have
reported a bug like this so I am a bit of a noob.
I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and adjusted the
audio as was suggested. Attached is the output from running the amixer

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I was reading man pages and saw
something about 'pacmd', so I was poking around in that shell. Found the
command 'list-source-outputs' and ran it first when recording (successfully)
with Sound Recorder, then ran it when unsuccessfully attempting to reco
