I also have this problem with a karmic 32bit guest in KVM.
It correctly boots once every 10-20 boot-ups, sounds like something
isn't waiting long enough for something else to come available, leaving
it working over to 'luck'.

Same for me. Intel Mb + E4300 Cpu. Karmic 64-bit gives same error after fresh
install.
Will try 32-bit now.

BTW - I had been running happily on Jaunty 32bit. Had installed Karmic
Alpha 5 thru Beta3 via upgrade. This only happen when I decided to go
for a clean install of Karmic 32bit.
