I had the same issue. For completeness sake the full fix by Nathan
should have been.
I resolved this with a simple hack:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.16
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.10
I personally had to do the following today
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.16
/usr/lib
Same problem on 9.04 - running from a command line I can see a bit more
info:
$ gnome-open /tmp/mozOpenDownload/gdocs_1.9.0.oxt

I have installed openoffice.org-java-common and openjdk-6-jre (Ubuntu
9.04) and I encounter the same error message.
