I have tried to compile 2.6.33-rc8 with the patch that records the
batchbuffer, but unfortunately it doesn't boot at all. I don't know what
I did wrong. Probably it needs some special configuration option.

Yes, that should be enough. There was a chance it would fix it, but it
was good to know either way. It turns out that the batchbuffer dumps
with current kernels are not useful anymo

There is a patch upstream to libdrm that should fix many issues like
this one. I have added this patch to the Lucid version of libdrm and
uploaded it to my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/standard .

than a few seconds (the last update killed it, maybe the next one will
resurrect it). thanks for your help, this has been a fun experience,
troublesome, but fun. i do hope we can catch this bug... its sort of

interesting. the freeze looked like the ones i have been having except
when testing keys (i check the numlock or caps to check for keyboard
activity) the screen went black and the mouse turned to a wheel for a
second. i then checked for virtual terminals in which i could access all
of them. there w
this freeze the mouse locked up too (different bug ?).

If Lucid with xorg-edgers turns out to be running fine (xorg-edgers
usually has other bugs, but if it is not freezing) and Lucid without
it does freeze, we may have quite a lot of troubleshooting to do in
order to find the fix. If standard Lucid does not freeze, we can all
rejoice :-)

management, screensavers and normal visual effects online (i had these
off in the karmic installation, as to not jolt the gpu any more than
necessary ).

trouble), with the new kernel upgrade just released(2.6.31-15). i am

i have been using x crack pushers packages, and have had clean sailing
for a little while, but now i get a lock up every 5 min. this time the
mouse is freezing too (a different bug ?). attached is the batchbuffer
dump. the last two lockups have been using firefox alone and have

Geir, I have filed a separate report as bug #484020.
I will not be able to use PPA packages on the system in question (it is
now remote for me, and used as a family Internet terminal), but I hope
to reproduce the bug on another, more easily-accessible machine.

I'm attaching a tarball produced as instructed in the wiki page you

Note that this was produced over an hour after the initial freeze, as it
occurred while I was away. That aside, the failure mode appears
practically the same as the one I reported previously (only some of t

This sounds like a freeze bug (GPU hang). We need a batchbuffer dump to
