Aparently the software behaved as it should, so I set the bug status to
"invalid"

This is exactly what the pre-installation script just did:

According to the dpkg log file:
Unpacking mysql-server-5.0 (from

Aborting downgrade from (at least) 5.1 to 5.0.
It seems that you had mysql 5.1 already installed. If so downgrading to 5.0 is
not possible.
