There's a major slowdown for the 3.1.1 version when AA is active and it
needs to rerender images:

Try disabling AA as described in that bug and see if it helps. For what
it's worth I can use Japanese glyphs with AA disabled witho
I just noticed that the lag time rapidly grows worse as the slide is
repeatedly selected and deselected. Might be a runaway memory leak.
