@David There's a private e-mail thread discussing it, and it certainly
has been raised in the #ubuntu-devel and #ubuntu-bugs irc channels. I
haven't been able to reproduce it yet, but I'm trying a number of
different dist-upgrade paths in a Jaunty vbox.

@Daniel: There have been a lot of bugreports running Jaunty's kernel on
Karmic. Do you know if this has been discussed somewhere? We really need
to sort it out. I searched for it in Launchpad, but couldn't find any
discussion leading to a conclusion.

I've updated grub, but it didn't change:

Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst

Did you use "sudo update-grub"?

I've updated from 9.04 to 9.10 via Update Manger. grub.cfg/menu.lst show
this:

title Ubunt
@IDWMaster It isn't a dupe.
@simone The cause for this bug is the use of Jaunty's kernel (2.6.28)
instead of Karmic's (2.6.31). You should use the latter if you intend
to use Karmic! Most likely your grub configuration (grub.cfg/menu.lst)
was not updated properly.

You should check to make sure this is not a duplicate of bug 458986
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/458986). It
should be marked as such if this is the case.
