Hardware Drivers (jockey) probably could be extended for this
functionality. It isn't an alsa-driver prerogative.

the http://www.medibuntu.org or alsa-project.org"
Why not?

alsa-firmware don`t help.. any change.. no sound with deb from repos.
So I download source from alsa-project, compile it (alsa-driver, alsa-firmware
(3.6Mb of source...), alsa-lib ..).
Now I have a sound...
And I must do this anytime steel 0.15 alsa release... (2007-09-13)
Why sound don`t work
Please try to install the alsa-firmware package and see if that helps.
Hmm...it seems to be available at http://www.medibuntu.org, but that
version seems a bit old. Could still be worth a try though.
