I just don't think Empathy should depend so elusively on the indicator-applet,
at minimum they should use in conjunction with providing their on applet there
at same time:

By default, in the upcoming release. I don't think empathy should rest
in the indicator-applet.
Most users are coming from pidgin, and they are use to seeing a applet
specifically for IM. I know this would confuse my Uncle, who I
previously set up to use pidgin.
Having Empathy in the indicator-ap
When I attempt to edit it, the border becomes red, and I see this
message in the bottom-left of that div element:
"Entity-body was not a well-formed JSON document."

the issue is rather an indicator applet one, you can turn it off the
indicator use in the empathy preferences though too
