The weird thing is that if I type "gnome-screensaver", I get this
output:

Which means that it's already running in this session. There's something
wrong with it, and I still can't start a guest session.

That looks fine, they set up and destroy the guest session user just
fine.

That's no problem, seems you don't have gnome-screensaver running then.
