I tested this bug on Lucid again:
I changed /etc/X11/xorg.conf entries back to
Option "SWcursor" "false" # []
Option "HWcursor" "true" # []
again. The bug doesn't occur anymore. Login worked always at the first
attempt since then.

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you

Same problem. Xorg SEGV upon xfce login from GDM after upgrade from

Setting SWcursor to true as indicated in earlier posts prevents the

Unfortunately, the login fails with the "Fatal IO error 104 (Connection

Are you all using nvidia chips? Does disabling HWcursor help for all?

Hmm, I've never had any issues with logging in. All my problems seem to
stem from not using the machine for long periods of time ( >24 hours).
I came in this morning to find the machines display to be non

Since in the backtrace there was something about cursor, I tried editing
xorg.conf and changed the following in "Device" Section:
Option "SWcursor" "true"
Option "HWcursor" "false"
Now login always works on the first attempt.

I run into same issue. I was never able to log in through GUI. Log in
through text console was fine.
I had to delete all content from ~/.cache/sessions to be able to log
through GUI again

I just saw that there's a "??" when calling nv_drv.so in the backtrace.
But there's no *-dbg package for xserver-xorg-video-nv. If it's of any
relevance, could you please point me to some information how to get
debug symbols for this driver?
