Now with OSS I get loud and clear sound, however the keyboard controls
are not working properly.

I'm a very long ways from being an expert but this is the fix finally
got me sound.
Sound:
The sound hardware will be detected, but will not work out of the box. You need
to merely add the following line to your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell
and restart the c
The backports don't work for me and I still have no sound.
I've got a Dell Studio 1450 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 card.

Fixed the problem, but perhaps the default settings should be corrected?
System -> Preferences -> Sound
Output tab
select "Internal Audio Analog Stereo"
Connector should be "Analog Output", not headphones
My suspicion is that the video card (ATI Radeon Mobility 4670) is the
problem since it shows
