Card is a "nVidia Corporation G84 [GeForce 8600 GT]" (as reported by
lspci)
I use nvidia binary drives (185.18.36). I have tried driver version
173.14.20, but no difference.

What video drivers were you using on Jaunty and in Karmic? Proprietary
enabled? What card?
You can use the lspci command to check if you're unsure.
