Well, I got another machine to try, but it's a fresh install of 7.04.
NetworkManager from the start. Works fine, even handling VPN
connections, which is nice.

I don't think the reporter's ESSID was manually configured... of that
setting, he said "before commenting it out so I could try
NetworkManager".
