The final karmic version works - the bug is obsolete now.
I think it had something to do with my encrypted swap drive not being
mounted.

Karmic doesn't even start up with live-cd here (So without upgrade from 9.04).
most recently I tried the 20091013 64 bit version.
But the beta always started...
I hope this fix will be fixed soon.
