Culprits: broken hardware and broken bios. Try working around both with
position_fix=1 in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf's options snd-hda-intel
line.

linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic works after a cold boot, but it does
not after a reboot.
After cold boot:
- Sound from speaker: ok
- Sound from headset: ok (and speaker turns off)
- Built in Microphone: does not work
- External microphone: works
- Still works after suspend/resume

Thinking it might be related to bug #438318, I installed the linux-
backports-modules-alsa and rebooted: no change.
Not that I installed from UNR beta.
