Yes, I am trying to set my friend up with Ubuntu on his Dell laptop with
Intel processor. Installed 9.10 OK. Rhythmbox opens his Ipod nano,
but doesn't seem to allow access or play the songs. Rhythmbox error
window says he needs MPEG-1 LAYER 3 (MP3) decoder. That may be, because

This problem applies to me as well. gtkpod will not recognize the
device, but rhythmbox does - but rhythmbox does not load videos. I'm
running Karmic Koala with latest updates. It is on a different machine
than this one so I don't have any diagnostic output - but the symptoms
are the same as above
This problem also applies to me: Ubuntu 9.10 fully updated. GTKpod
recognizes the ipod. With podsleuth i get the error
Found an iPod device, but it is not known by PodSleuth:

I have the very same problem here using ubuntu 9.10 NBR on lenovo S10.
songbird and gtkpod can't see my ipod nano but rythmbox is ok.
I confirm the test from Ferran Bassora. i went through the exact same
errors.

Same problems. Banshee don't reconize my Ipod Nano 4Gb.
My test:

No iPods were found in the HAL device tree
~# /etc/init.d/hal restart

Found an iPod device, but it is not known by PodSleuth:

Same problem here. Only rhytmbox recognized my ipod. Amarok2 and banshee no.

Same issues, 80GB 6th gen. It WAS recognized by rhythmbox, so I'm using
that for the time being. I can provide other info if needed. Running a
fresh install of karmic beta.

I have this problem too with a 5/6th gen 120gig video ipod classic.
gtkpod, songbird, rhythmbox, and amarok2 didn't recognize it.
