I've reinstalled Karmic, but now unable to reproduce the core dump. The
version of ffmpeg is the same, but the X server is newer.
What should have been in the apport data, should it happen again?

issue further. Please file the bug with the ubuntu-bug so that our
automatic retracer can try to create a meaningful backtrace of this.
